About Peeranha
Peeranha was founded by a scientist who saw the same problem from both sides of the desk: manuscripts stalled for months waiting on reviewers, and the reviewers themselves - the experts making the whole system work - were paid nothing for it.
Why we built this
Peer review is the backbone of science. Without it, no paper gets published, no result gets validated, no discovery gets trusted. Yet the experts who do this work - reviewers who spend eight, ten, sometimes fifteen hours on a single manuscript - receive nothing for it. No pay, no formal recognition, no acknowledgement that their time has value. In an industry where research funding is already scarce, the system asks its best people to do some of its most important work for free.
The same slowness that undervalues reviewers also stalls the science itself. Groundbreaking results sit in a queue for months, waiting for an editor to find someone willing to read them for nothing. We built Peeranha because both halves of that problem have the same fix: pay for the work, and the work gets done faster.
What we do
Peeranha connects journals with verified expert reviewers and compensates reviewers fairly for their work. Journals pay a transparent fee based on manuscript type and the number of reviewers requested. Reviewers are paid once they submit a completed review - whether the journal accepts or declines it, because the work was done either way. The process is faster, more accountable, and more attractive to the best experts in every field.
What we stand for
Five things guide every decision we make, in the product and in how we run the company:
- Transparency. Trust is built by showing, not telling. Journals and reviewers can see every step, every deadline, and every fee - including what we charge and why.
- Fairness. Expertise deserves to be valued. A reviewer who submits a completed review gets paid, full stop - the outcome of the editorial decision is a separate question from whether the work was done.
- Rigor. Good decisions come from careful, honest scrutiny. Our reviewer community is made up of verified experts who chose to be here, and we hold ourselves to the same standard of evidence we ask of them.
- Quality. Standards are a promise, not a suggestion. Every review meets a clear minimum bar, and so do our product and our support.
- Progress. Old habits don't get a pass just because "that's how it's always been done." Paying for peer review is the clearest example - and we keep questioning our own process the same way.
Why "Peeranha"
The name comes from peer review - with a nod to the piranha, the fish that shares its name. We mean it as a sign of ambition and bite, not aggression: a school of peers, working together, moving fast.
Who we are
We are scientists. We understand what it means to receive a review at 11 p.m. on a Friday before a rebuttal deadline. We built Peeranha because we wanted the platform we always wished existed - one that treats reviewers as the professionals they are.
Peeranha is operated by Peeranha S.L., registered in Spain.
